Article: The First Scriveiner Notebook

The First Scriveiner Notebook

Why a pen company made a notebook

Scriveiner has made pens since 2019, and we have loved writing for a good deal longer. Over those years, it became hard to ignore that we were offering good pens without proper pages to write on. There are plenty of notebooks on the market, but this notebook is how we see the notebook as it should be.

The search for paper

Finding the right paper took years of research, a good deal of deliberation, and dozens of handshakes across several countries. We visited each paper maker ourselves. We wanted to understand how paper is made, how a manufacturer keeps its quality consistent from one batch to the next, and what a good sheet should reasonably cost.

We had already settled on a paper when we came across a 100 gsm Japanese stock that felt right the moment we touched it. It is highly absorbent and acid-free, with just enough tooth to make writing interesting and a surface fine enough to resist feathering. We tested it thoroughly with different inks and pens, and it passed every test. That included the lower edge of the page, where the natural oils from a resting hand can sometimes disrupt the ink flow.

That Japanese paper, of course, cost almost twice as much as the one we had already chosen. The writing experience it offered was so much better, however, that we changed course. It seemed the only reasonable choice for a notebook made for people who care about how a pen feels on the page.

We put a great deal of time, care, and craft into this notebook, and we hope it earns a permanent place on your desk.
