She Has Always Been There: Scriveiner on Mother's Day
The world has a way of becoming harder to navigate. Noisier, somewhat faster, heavier, in ways that are difficult to explain to anyone who has not felt it themselves, read the news or deal with daily chores.
In most of our lives, there is one person in whose presence all of that recedes. She does not change the world. She is simply being present, and always has been present. And somehow that fact alone is steadying.
She was the first handwriting you knew. The sticky note on the fridge that told you lunch was in the blue container. The algebra homework she sat beside you to work through, recalling things she had not thought about in twenty years, because you needed her to. The birthday card with a few lines inside that said more than most letters manage. The small note tucked into a book she had read herself, left there for you to find, in her hand, at exactly the right page.
Her words were always meant to find you.
This Mother's Day, give her something that carries the same weight.

We have been thinking about what that gift looks like. Not something obvious, like flowers that will be gone by the weekend or a voucher that might sit there unused. Something she will keep on her desk. Something she will actually use.
The Aubergine came back to us as the answer.
We originally launched it as a Special Edition rollerball. The response was warmer than we had anticipated: customers held onto their pens, wrote to ask if it was coming back, paused at pen shows to say something about this particular colour that they found difficult to put into words. There was a feeling attached to it that went beyond the object itself.
That feeling has a long history. The colour draws from a lineage once reserved for emperors and statesmen. In antiquity, Tyrian purple was so rare and labour-intensive to produce that it became a symbol of authority and learning — worn only by those whose words and decisions shaped the world around them. It is more accessible now, but the weight of it has not entirely gone.
This year, for Mother's Day, the Classic Aubergine returns as a permanent colour and for the first time in all three writing styles: fountain pen, rollerball, and ballpoint. The same deep lacquer, the same silver-chrome appointments, the same brass body that gives it a presence the moment it is picked up. It arrives in an elegant box with a silky cushion, a hidden compartment beneath containing a spare refill or fountain pen cartridges, and a lifetime mechanical warranty card — ready to give, without anything further required.
Some colours are simply legendary.
This one is also the right gift for the person who has given you everything — and who deserves, at least once, something that is entirely, unhurriedly, hers.
